Susanne Gruber († 2021)

Idea and structure

Susanne Gruber (Susanne Göße) worked as an author, organised international art projects and ran the Arts Production BIRACH. Her own theatre works are mainly experimental pieces that are created in cooperation with various artists or in creative exchange with her husband. After studying sinology, literature and business administration, she worked at various universities and as a translator from Chinese to German. Her publications include anthologies, professional articles, essays and plays.

Susanne was the driving and shaping force in further developing Birach into that unique creative open space for artists from all over the world. She has provided us with an incentive to take on the future challenges at all times with her deep and reflective thinking, her extraordinary persona, her discipline and her welcoming and open nature.

»What is a home without the people, who go along with what you do?«

We thank

all many dear people who have stood by us for many years and we would like to thank them for their active support, their help and the good times they have given us.

We would like to thank all our friends who have always supported us energetically and helped us to overcome many a lean period. Our warmest thanks go first to Burkhard Kissenkötter, whose artistic creativity and craftsmanship are still visible in Birach today and who was the good soul of Birach for many years. We thank Paco Gonzales for the wonderful children's circus performances that he rehearsed with the children in many, many hours of practice. We especially thank Ellen Mai for the design and the energetic cultivation of our garden. We thank Walter Ecker, Irene Hartmann, Rafael Mayer, Flippy Becker, Jochen and Iris Grün, Alexandria Mayer, Rainer Kühn for their many years of support. We thank Klaus Hagedorn, Michael Ibers and Andreas Hendrich for their help with the extension of the dojo in the Stadl and we thank all the other helpers.

We thank all the craftsmen and masters of their trade! The reconstruction of a monument requires high craftsmanship, a lot of know-how and the mastery of old techniques. We thank all the craftsmen who helped to make Birach the beautiful place it is today and who are still helping to maintain it today:Thomas Thalmeier, joinery, Dorfen. Klaus Westphal, carpentry, Wasentegernbach. Company Rott, building contractor, Schwindegg. Company Dengl Holzbau, Großkatzbach near Dorfen. Company Wagner, carpentry, Lohkirchen. Company Multerer, electrician, Gumattenkirchen. Company Frenzel, electrician, Neumarkt St. Veit. Company Fuchs, heating construction, Neumarkt St. Veit.

We don't know how to thank Angelika Gösse, who keeps the house and yard in order, lovingly looks after our guests and always has an ear for their big and small problems. We thank Michael Pongratz, who takes care of everything, really everything in Birach and assists us with his craftsmanship and tireless commitment. And we thank his wife, who always lends a hand and takes care when there is something to be done. We thank the Strasser family, who help maintain our meadows and forest and come with a tractor every time a vehicle gets stuck in snow or mud. We thank Albert and Elfie Multerer, because they are simply always there when you need them – from repairing the dryer to making fresh rolls for the guests.

And I thank – last but not least – my first wife Mechthild Stiller and my two eldest wonderful daughters Lena and Louisa for their help and understanding in the first years of setting up. At this point I would also like to thank my brothers Hans and Stefan, who have always been helpful to me. Above all, I would like to thank my parents Martin and Maria Gruber, whose love and support made the reconstruction possible in the first place.
